Hi, everyone. Kevin Egan here with Asset Protection Services of Colorado. I’m out on a bike ride in Morrison, Colorado, in Bear Creek Park, and I’m going to answer a question for you. It seems like the perfect time, right? The question is, can insurance companies drop your coverage? Well, they can, of course. Typically, we don’t see auto policies getting dropped unless it’s for non-payment, so if you don’t pay your bills. Of course, DUIs, driving under the influence, DWI, driving while intoxicated, you might see insurance companies drop you for those. Those are pretty major. In terms of motor vehicle records, yeah, if you have a lot of violations, you could see a non-renewal. But typically, you just see higher charges in premium. It’s best to keep your moving violations under less than two in three years. So, yeah, as far as claims, we don’t see insurance companies typically dropping you because of claims.

In fact, we’ve got a customer with 30 claims in the last 10 years. Yeah, that’s, if my math is correct, three claims a year, and they still have coverage. But if you lose your driving privileges, you’re going to be asked to get an SR-22, a statement of financial responsibility, filed out with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. You’ll be paying non-standard rates. It means higher premiums. So moral of the story, keep paying your bills. Don’t get a lot of tickets. Don’t drive while drinking or under the influence of drugs. Hey, everyone. Kevin Egan here with Asset Protection Services of Colorado. Today’s question is in regards to auto rates. The question is, why in the H-E double hockey sticks are rates continuing to rise?
Well, fair question. Let me give you a little background. Over the last 10 years, rates in Colorado have gone up probably close to 80%. We’re the third highest state in the country for rate increases. Why is that? Number one, we switched to an at-fault state in 2003. So whoever’s at fault in the accident, their insurance company pays. Colorado has seen massive growth. It’s an awesome place to live, and apparently the word’s gotten out. So more traffic means more accidents, more claims, higher premiums. There’s some evidence that the legalization of pot has led to more accidents, so we have higher claims or more claims, higher premiums. Also, cars are just more sophisticated electronically, and it costs more to repair them. Then we’ve got a lot of uninsured drivers. About 16% of the drivers don’t have insurance, which is illegal. So don’t do it. Call us to get covered.
Now, there’s more to come on the subject in terms of how rates are set; but in short, agencies have no ability to raise rates, lower rates, negotiate rates set by the corporate office, approved by the state commissioner. Hey everyone, Kevin Egan here with Asset Protection Services of Colorado. And the question for today is regarding auto insurance. Can you cancel your policy at any time? The answer is yes, of course. You’re under no contractual obligation, and you are entitled to a refund if it’s applicable. So in other words, let’s say it’s a six-month policy, you’re three months into it. You’re unhappy with the service you’re getting, or whatever the case may be, and you decide to cancel. If you prepaid that policy, so if you paid for the full six months in advance, you would get three months back. If you’re paying monthly and you cancel at the end of the month, then you may not get a refund.
